When to Schedule Your High School Senior Portrait?

SENIOR PORTRAIT SESSION IN THE STUDIO/INDOOR

With the school season in full swing, I have been receiving many questions about the perfect timing for scheduling Senior Portrait sessions.

The honest answer is that they can be taken anytime so don’t feel the pressure to tether yourself to a rigid schedule. The world of high school seniors is abuzz with classes, college applications, and sports commitments, therefore the time to be taking your pictures will depend on how busy he/she is.

I count myself fortunate to operate a studio so come rain or late winter evenings, we are set to capture great images without limitations!

Now, when it comes to pinpointing the best timing for your sessions, there are a few key factors to ponder.

THE YEARBOOK

Be sure to check the yearbook deadlines and aim to book your session 2-3 weeks before the final day. This ensures your images make it into the yearbook pages

HOLIDAY CARDS

If you are thinking of using these images for your holiday cards, mark your calendar between late summer and November.

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

If your goal is to have images for graduation announcements, you have more flexibility and can book your session closer to the graduation day.

SENIOR PORTRAIT SESSION AT A SPECIFIC LOCATION/OUTDOOR

As you think about your session, you might be leaning towards an outdoor session, a special location, or even the serene beach. If this is where your heart is set, here are a few things to remember:

WINTER

I know, we live in California so winter is not really an issue, but keep in mind that it may be rainy and/or chilly. But, the magic of cozy sweaters, scarves, and layers can add a wonderful touch to your photos, creating a comfortable and cozy vibe.

SPRING

Spring is nice, the green is coming back and you can still use a couple of layers (for example a jacket over a dress/t-shirt)

SUMMER

The nice thing about summer is that you have more time so probably more relaxed overall, sunsets and vibrant blue skies are beautiful

FALL

Fall hues are beautiful – It’s important to note that the evenings arrive earlier during this time, so to make the most of the natural light, consider being available a bit earlier in the day of your session. Ultimately, booking your senior's session comes down to picking a time that works best for them, when they have a little breathing space.

Additionally, the choice of season can greatly influence the visual vibe of the photos, the main thing is how they personally feel about it.

Have a great school year everyone!
